A message from the Founder and Managing Editor of Global Media Journal

To the readers of the inaugural issue of

Global Media Journal: Mediterranean Edition.

Greetings and welcome to the inaugural issue of the Mediterranean Edition of Global Media Journal—“The Global Communication Network of Scholars,” with 11 confirmed and established editions throughout the world.

I congratulate Dr. Mashoed Bailie on the creation of his new journal and thank his colleagues, including members of the administration, at the Eastern Mediterranean University, who supported this exciting project.  Their collective foresight in realizing the outstanding potential of digital technologies—particularly the Internet—is displayed by their enthusiasm in supporting this innovative electronic journal which connects major universities and academic organizations around the globe.

The first edition of Global Media Journal was launched in fall of 2002. As the founder and managing editor of GMJ, I am pleased to note that since then this groundbreaking open-access publication has steadily and firmly established itself as a credible and respected journal and is cited by the communication scholars and researchers.

The consistent goal of GMJ is to address diverse interests of media and journalism scholars, researchers, teachers, students, and institutions engaged in international activities, particularly communication. As of this writing (April 2006), in addition to the American and Mediterranean Editions, there are the following established and confirmed editions:

Global Media Journal—African Edition, sponsored by the Institute for Media Analysis in South Africa (iMasa) and co-edited by Professors Arnold S de Beer and Herman Wasserman. To be inaugurated in May 2006.

Global Media Journal—Arabic Edition, sponsored by the American University-Cairo, Egypt, and edited by Professor Hussein Amin.

Global Media Journal—Spanish Edition, sponsored by the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico, and edited by Professor José Carlos Lozano.

Global Media Journal—Turkish Edition, sponsored by the Eastern Mediterranean University, Cyprus, and edited by Professor Bekir Azgin. To be inaugurated in Spring 2006.

Other editions are being planned. The goal is to establish an edition of the journal in every major language and region of the world, thereby creating a global research and communication network for scholars, students, teachers, journalists, interested individuals, and institutions around the world. Ultimately, such a network will facilitate exchange of information and knowledge in a timely and efficient manner. It will, thus, be a channel for enhancing and promoting intercultural communication, understanding, and global cooperation among diverse cultures and institutions.

Once again, congratulations to Dr. Mashoed Bailie on the successful launching of the Mediterranean Edition and to those administrators, staff members, students, and faculty members of the Eastern Mediterranean University who lent their support to the project.

I join you in proud recognition of yet another accomplishment in the history of your progressive and highly regarded university.

Welcome to the Global Media Journal —“The Global Communication Network of Scholars.”
